HOLY MATRIMONY (ቅዱስ ተክሊል)
The Mystery of Holy Matrimony
Holy Matrimony, in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, is one of the sacred mysteries established by God for the union of a man and a woman. It is not merely a social agreement or human contract, but a holy covenant blessed by God, through which two persons become one in body, mind, and spirit.
From the beginning, God instituted marriage. As it is written: “It is not good that man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18). God created woman and united her with man, and the Scripture declares: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). This union is not only physical but spiritual, reflecting unity, love, and divine purpose.
In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus Christ affirmed the holiness of marriage. He taught: “What God has joined together, let no man separate” (Matthew 19:6). By this teaching, Christ elevated marriage from a natural relationship to a sacred and indissoluble bond. Marriage is therefore not temporary, but a lifelong commitment rooted in God’s will.
The Apostle Paul further explains the spiritual meaning of marriage, saying: “This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the Church” (Ephesians 5:32). In this teaching, marriage becomes an image of the relationship between Christ and His Church. Just as Christ loves the Church sacrificially, the husband is called to love his wife. And just as the Church honors Christ, the wife is called to live in respect and unity with her husband.
Holy Matrimony is performed in the Church through the blessing of the priest. The priest invokes the grace of the Holy Spirit, and the couple receives divine blessing to begin their life together. Through this mystery, marriage becomes not only a human relationship, but a means of grace (ጸጋ) that strengthens the couple in their spiritual journey.
The purpose of marriage in the Orthodox Church is not only companionship, but also the growth of holiness. Husband and wife are called to help one another attain salvation, to live in faith, prayer, and righteousness. Marriage is a path toward God, where love is purified and transformed into self-sacrifice.
The Church Fathers teach the importance of marriage with great depth. Saint John Chrysostom describes marriage as a spiritual unity where husband and wife become one soul. He teaches that the home should be a “little church,” where God is honored and children are raised in faith. Saint Basil the Great emphasizes that marriage must be rooted in holiness and guided by the commandments of God.
Marriage also has the blessing of bearing children. Children are seen as gifts from God, as it is written: “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28). Parents are entrusted with the responsibility of raising their children in the knowledge of God, teaching them faith, prayer, and righteous living.
However, marriage also requires sacrifice. Love in marriage is not based on feelings alone, but on commitment, patience, and forgiveness. The Apostle teaches: “Love suffers long and is kind… bears all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4–7). Through these virtues, the marriage bond is strengthened and preserved.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church teaches that marriage is holy and should not be broken. Separation and divorce are not part of God’s original plan. Therefore, couples are called to perseverance, humility, and prayer, trusting in God’s grace to sustain their union.
Ultimately, Holy Matrimony is a path of salvation. It is a calling to live a life of love, unity, and holiness. Through this mystery, the family becomes a place where God dwells, and where His love is revealed in daily life.
