The Holy Water (Tsebel)

Holy Water, known in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church as Tsebel (ጸበል), is a sacred means of healing, purification, and blessing through the power of God. It is not ordinary water, but water that has been sanctified by prayer, the Holy Spirit, and the invocation of God’s name through the priesthood of the Church.

From the Holy Scriptures, water has always been a sign of life, cleansing, and divine grace. In the beginning, the Spirit of God moved upon the waters (Genesis 1:2), showing that water is connected to the life-giving power of God. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself was baptized in the Jordan River (Matthew 3:16), sanctifying the waters of the world and making them a means of spiritual renewal.

Holy Water is prepared through special prayers offered by the priest, invoking the Holy Trinity and calling upon the Holy Spirit to sanctify the water. Through this, the water becomes a channel of divine grace, used for healing both body and soul. As the Scripture says: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him” (James 5:14).

In the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, Holy Water is received with faith, prayer, and repentance. It is not a magical act, but a spiritual practice that requires humility and trust in God. Through faith, God grants healing, deliverance, and renewal.

In our church practice, Holy Water (ጸበል) is offered at the beginning of every Ethiopian month, from the 1st to the 7th. Those who desire to receive Holy Water are asked to make an appointment in advance, so that they may properly prepare themselves in prayer and reverence.

Holy Water also reminds believers of their baptism and their calling to live a pure and holy life. It is a visible sign of God’s invisible grace, calling us to repentance and spiritual renewal.

Ultimately, Holy Water is a gift of God’s mercy. Through it, the faithful are strengthened, healed, and drawn closer to Him.
